Viu, MAKCH, 1942 SERIAL No. 215 State Science Group to Meet at Wesleyan West Virginia Academy Convenes May 1, 2 Preparations Are Progressing for entertaining scores of visitors at the annual meeting of the West Virginia Academy of Science on the Wesleyan campus May 1 and 2. The meeting will bring to Buckhannon leaders in science education from all parts of the state. The West Virginia Junior Academy of Science, composed of approximately four hundred high school students, will also meet in Buckhannon at that time. Dr. James E. Judson, professor of biology at Wesleyan, is secretary of the organization and is supervising the plans for the conference. Other officers are Dr. Friend E. Clark, West Virginia University, president; Dr. Andrew Leitch, Bethany College, vice-president; and Dr. Nelle Ammons, West Virginia University, treasurer. The West Virginia Academy of Science is an association of persons interested in the biological, physical, and social sciences. It is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which annually provides a small fund to aid in the promotion of scientific research. The fund is awarded to members of the Academy on the basis of the merit of the problem to be investigated. The Academy also sponsors such projects which may be practicable for the promotion of scientific interest in West Virginia. Dr. Arthur A. Schoolcraft, professor of education at Wesleyan, has been named chairman of the local arrangements committee in charge of the forthcoming meeting. Assisting him will be Dr. Nicholas Hyma, professor of chemistry, and the Benzene Ring, student chemistry society, in charge of exhibits; Dean 0. D. Lambert and Ross Bonar, superintendent of Upshur county schools, in charge of lodging; Dr. and Mrs. Wallace B. Fleming and Mrs. C. Edmund Neil, dean of women, receptions; Prof. W. A. Hallam and Dean Gerwig, signs; Floyd N. Shaver, A. L. Aylesworth, and Miss Gladys Cronemeyer, head of the Wesleyan home economics department, banquet arrangements; Dr. Judson and the Nucleus Club, student biology society, field trips; and Mr. Bonar, Chalmers Ault, George Dixon, and Beth Darnall of the Buckhannon-Upshur high school faculty and Wesleyan alumni, Junior Academy arrangements. In addition to the business sessions of the Academy, a program of general interest is planned for the meeting. A feature will be an address by a visiting scientist of national reputation. Various sectional meetings are conducted for the purpose of listening to papers and discussions on topics of specialized scientific interest. 0 Speech Festival Participants from Wesleyan at the annual convocation at Concord State Teachers College in Athens on March 20 and 21 included a group of dramatic and forensic students. They were accompanied by Mrs. C. Edmund Neil, head of the public speaking department, and Prof. Harold N. Ahlgren, coach of debate. "Mr. F," a one-act comedy by Percival Wilde, was presented by the dramatic students at the festival. In the cast were Bachel Zickefoose, Buckhannon; Clarence Winans, Arlington, N. J.; Bonald Sleeth, Charleston; and Peter Tom- ley, Alexandria, Va. Harold Kenney of Buckhannon was stage manager and Eleanor Gil- more of Wheeling had charge of properties. En route to Athens the cast stopped at Summersville and Rainelle to give the play before high school assemblies in those cities. Debaters who took part in the festival were Rachel Cosgrove, Buckhannon; Jack Burner, Ivanhoe; Sam Kyle, Clarksburg; and Allen Cut- right, Buckhannon. 0 Dr. Lynn Harold Hough, dean of the Drew Theological Seminary, at Madison, N. J., will be the Commencement speaker at the graduation exercises for Wesleyan seniors on May 18. The Alumni gathering will take place on Saturday, May 16, with the dinner in the evening before the Commencement play. Harold G. Cut- right, Wesleyan graduate, and now vice-president of Standard Brands, Incorporated, will be the speaker, and Dr. Thomas Zumbrunnen will act as toastmaster. Sunday, May 17, will be Baccalaureate Sunday. Further details concerning the graduation week activities will be given in the next Bulletin.
