Description
DAWES UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 1883-2003 ; Celeb rating 120 years The first pastor of our church , originally known as Fairfield Methodist Episcopal Church , was the Rev . J.A . Dixon . He was appointed at the WV Methodist Episcopal Conference held in October 1883 in Wheeling , WV . At that time the church , which was built by Mr . John Crawford , was located near the creek bank across the road from its present site . The land was donated by the Cabin Creek Kanawha Coal Co . and the Williams Coal Co. , both owned by the Shonk family . After the church was damaged by flood waters in 1916 the land was traded and a new church built in its present location but facing the opposite direction . The church was later turned around to its current setting with the help of Pure Oil Co . employees . A classroom , vestibule and porch were added . A small wood structure was moved onto the site to house Sunday school classes . The structure was replaced in 1967 with the completion of the current education building containing several classrooms , a kitchen and a fellowship hall . This building was completely refurbished in 2001 by members of the congregation including the current pastor , Rev . Lorens E . Dunnett .
